Don't Privatize Monitoring of Sex Offenders--CALL TO ACTION

Dear Local 2748 Member,

We need your help. Some Wisconsin legislators are considering privatizing GPS monitoring of sex offenders. They are thinking about eliminating millions of dollars from the Governor's budget along with over 100 represented positions.

That would result in some out-of-state company attempting to provide the supervision that is presently carried out by Wisconsin Probation and Parole Agents. Please see attached "AFSCME Position Paper on GPS Funding" for more information.

We know from experience that the actual responsibility for responding to offender violations will always fall back on the shoulders of the Wisconsin agents. This means that those state employees would once again be asked to do more, with fewer resources.

Here is what you can do:

Contact your own state senator and assembly representative. (If you donīt know who your elected officials are, please click on the link below)

1. Write, phone, e-mail or ask to meet with them personally. (Reminder: legislative contacts of this nature need to be done using personal time and resources. Do not use state phones or computers.)

2. Identify yourself as a member of AFSCME.

3. Tell them that you support the Governorīs GPS Budget proposal.

4. Register your support of the Governorīs Budget.

5. Ask them to reject attempts to privatize the monitoring of sex offenders.

We need you to take action now, before some legislators strip money and positions from the Governorīs budget.

We all know that sex offenders are best supervised by our trained Wisconsin Probation and Parole Agents. Core government functions such as the supervision of sex offenders should not be parceled out to profiteers from other states.

With your help, we can preserve the Governorīs budget and maintain the high level of sex offender supervision needed to keep Wisconsin safe.

In Solidary,

Marty Beil , Council 24 Executive Director
Bob McLinn, Council 24 President
Tom Corcoran, Local 2748 President
