For members of Local 2748
For those of you who are not
familiar with me, I am the Membership Secretary for Local 2748. My state
job is at DWD, as an adjudicator in Milwaukee.
Apparently DOC administration
has decided for all of us that we do not deserve the services provided
by Local 2748 President Tom Corcoran, other elected officers, and stewards.
Not content to restrict our representation in DOC, they have now impacted
agencies outside of DOC.
The DOC administration has
interfered with our rights to representation at DWD/PSS labor/management
meetings in January and also the quarterly union presidents meeting with
DWD Secretary Gassman in January.
Our president planned to attend
a DWD meeting in Green Bay on 2/11/05 and was directed not to go by DOC
administration. The members wanted Tom at that meeting because they are
being faced with lay offs. Since Tom was not allowed to attend, our members
were left without union representation during a very stressful and confusing
time.
Further, DOC administration
has directed Georgette Gehring not to attend the DHFS/BMCW labor management
meetings. She was previously appointed as a team member in these meetings
by our union.
Finally, DOC administration
has tried to take control of our stewards, deciding if and when they can
act as a grievance rep or a steward for disciplinary hearings involving
members from every Department.
It should be noted that during
the 12 weeks that we were not in office, the interim officers freely attended
meetings at their own discretion without any interference from DOC.
From my perspective, this is
clearly an attempt to control Local 2748, allowing it to operate only
as DOC management wishes.
If any members have experiences
to share regarding this, please contact me or any of the 2748 board members.
Thank you.
In solidarity,
Barbara Miller
